Greater Holland area

Suzuki violin and viola lessons.  The Suzuki Method is based on the philosophy that talent is not inborn (it can be nurtured) and the idea that if a child learns to speak his/her language before reading and writing, the same can be accomplished with playing an instrument.  The priority is not creating virtuosi but noble human beings.   • Lucille Spinner, Hudsonville/Jenison.  After teaching orchestra in the public schools for many years, Lucy left and joined the faculty at GRCC teaching privately in the Arts Outreach Program.  After four years there, she now teaches violin and viola privately and looks forward to expanding her home school student enrollment this fall.   • Zach Tolan, Holland/Greater Grand Rapids -  Private lessons or small groups in violin, viola, cello, guitar and piano, at your home or his. He is a full-time private music tutor, teaching an average of more than 50 lessons and groups each week for 15 years. He has led local orchestras, operated a set of fine arts centers for kids, and has a patent-pending notation system that simplifies reading notes, especially for young learners ages 4-10. Greater Grand Rapids Area


  • The Academy of Music GR offers private lessons as well as  2 group classes.  Keyboard games is a small group keyboard class for kindergartners.  Rock Band is a perfect next step for private lesson students  ages 10 and up who want to learn to make music in a group. Lessons are on a month to month basis that require registration only two weeks in advance. Please call (616) 965-1655 mid-August to register for classes in September. There is a family registration fee of $25 and Hamilton can cover a large portion of the monthly fee but the familiy will be responsible for $32 per month.

  • Becky Smith, Wyoming - graduated from Wheaton College with a B.A. in elementary education and an endorsement in teaching music.  Taught piano privately for 13 years, besides teaching my own children.   • Girls Choral Academy,  Grand Rapids. Inclusive community choirs for girls ages 5-18. Girls develop vocal technique, musical skills, expressive artistry, and an awareness of music from many cultures. Monthly tuition will be paid by Hamilton with a PBL Music Committment.   • Grand Rapids Choir of Men and Boys, Grand Rapids.  Please visit the audition page on their website for information on joining this choir.  Hamilton can pay for the tuition for the Preparatory, Junior, or Senior Choristors.  We do not pay for the summer camps.

  • Grand Rapids Civic Theater, You can take 1- 3 classes combined during their Fall and Winter terms (depending on cost of each class).   For Spring term you can take 1-3 classes (depending on cost of classes), or 1 class plus the performance block.  If you are interested in the performance block, please make sure to take all prerequisites.   GRCT is only available as a school year long program, and can't be added at second semester.  There is a $50 registration fee per student required at the time of  registration, and will be refunded if the student successfully completes their classes.   • Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Choruses.  Accepting students in grades 1-12 with audition.  Please contact Holly for audition information and let them know you are a Hamilton Home School student.

  • Joyful Sounds Music Studio, Grand Rapids.  Drumming and music classes, Rhythm Kids 1 & 2, are available for Hamilton students ages 5-8. These are exciting classes where children can explore the world of rhythm through movement, instrument play, songs and games. The three 10 week classes include a copy of the music and songbook for home use.  Drums are provided in class, but  Rhythm Kids 2 students are encouraged  (not required)  to purchase a drum for home use.
