For many fifth-grade students, one of the biggest challenges on the first day at Hamilton Middle School has nothing to do with classwork—it’s mastering the art of opening a locker.

Fortunately, plenty of help was nearby.

“Does anybody need locker help?” Dr. Brad Lusk called as he walked the hallways, quickly finding a few "customers". With staff members stationed throughout the 5th grade wing, students received step-by-step guidance, encouragement and plenty of opportunities to practice their combinations.

“Spin, spin, spin,” Dr. Lusk explained before helping students carefully turn the dial to each number. Some lockers opened right away. Others required a little more patience—and another spin or two.

When one student’s combination had been clearly labeled by a parent, Dr. Lusk declared it “a home run.” Another student proudly celebrated opening a locker on the first try, describing it as “magic.”

Most importantly, students were reminded that struggling with a locker on the first day is completely normal.

“You’re all right, bud. You’re doing great today,” Dr. Lusk reassured one student.

By the end of the morning, students who had arrived unsure of their combinations were opening their lockers with growing confidence. Dr. Lusk was just one of many Hamilton Middle School staff members who were ready to lend a hand, answer questions and help students navigate a new building and a new school year.

With patience, practice and a little teamwork, our fifth graders found the right combination for a fantastic first day.
