Hamilton Middle School sixth grader Aiden already has an idea of what he wants to do when he grows up: become a welder like his dad. Through the school’s new MEERA program, he is getting an early opportunity to explore that interest.

“It’s been really fun. We’ve gotten to do a lot,” Aiden said.

MEERA, which stands for Manufacturing and Engineering Education Reimagined for All, gives students opportunities to explore manufacturing and skilled trades. At Hamilton Middle School, those experiences include welding simulations, 3D printing, robotics and other technologies that introduce students to potential careers before high school.

For Aiden, the activities have included welding and non-destructive testing. He proudly shared that he earned a high score of 63 during a welding activity, well above the norm at his age. Along the way, he is learning the importance of patience and taking his time.

“I’m really grateful because I get to do something that not very many people get to do,” he said.

Led by teacher Remington Rohrer, Hamilton Middle School’s MEERA program was made possible through a Section 61v Career and Technical Education Expansion Grant from the Michigan Department of Education. The lab introduces students to equipment and skills used in manufacturing while helping them explore potential careers.

Aiden is also interested in injection molding. Having the chance to try different activities and attend Work Based Learning field trips is helping him think about which kind of work he might enjoy in the future.

“Hamilton is doing a great job getting me ready for what's next," Aiden said. "There’s multiple jobs I can do and learn about so that I can become successful."

For now, that exploration starts right in his middle school classroom, where an interest inspired by his dad is becoming an opportunity to practice and learn.
