Hamilton Community Schools’ youngest learners had plenty to explore on Monday, September 21, as Hawkeye Preschool students enjoyed their first day on the farm through the district’s new Farm Preschool program.

Students had fun walking around Critter Barn, seeing the animals and plants, and getting to know a place that will become part of their learning throughout the school year. The visit gave them an opportunity to explore together and experience farm life up close.

New for the 2026–27 school year, Farm Preschool is a partnership between Hawkeye Preschool and Critter Barn that combines instruction focused on kindergarten readiness with learning experiences on the farm. Animals, plants and the outdoor setting give students opportunities to make discoveries as they learn about the world around them.

The program is available through Hawkeye Preschool’s morning and afternoon half-day classes. Morning students visit the farm once a month, while afternoon students visit once a week. On days away from the farm, students attend Sandyview Learning Center, where they extend their learning in the classroom.

Monday’s visit was a fun introduction to that experience, giving students their first look at the farm they will continue exploring throughout the year.
