What an end to the first-ever season of Hamilton Unified basketball in 2024!
Hamilton High School and Hamilton Middle School athletes took to the floor for an intrasquad game on Friday, March 15, inside the HHS gymnasium. More importantly, they were able to play as part of an all-school assembly, with all students and staff in grades 5–12 present.
The environment was incredible. From rally towels and signs supporting the athletes to music, dance moves and T-shirt tosses, students and staff had a fantastic time. One athlete was moved to tears while talking with a coach after the game.
“I had so much fun,” she said. “I’m so excited right now. That was amazing.”
Students were able to witness the power of Unified Sports—many for the first time. Unified Sports bring students with and without intellectual disabilities together on the same team.
“That was the most amazing basketball game I’ve ever been to,” eighth-grade student Talon told a staff member after the game.
Kayla Kuczynski of Special Olympics attended the game and spoke to students about the power of inclusion and embracing different abilities.
WZZM 13 News also covered the event and planned to feature the story during its March 15 newscasts.
