218 Hamilton student-athletes are choosing to spend part of their summer getting better through Hamilton Elite Athletic Training (HEAT).

Open to students in grades 6-12, HEAT is designed to help athletes become stronger, faster, and more prepared for competition. The program runs three days a week for seven total weeks in the summer, serving athletes across all sports and focusing on athletic development that benefits every student-athlete.

Throughout the summer, athletes of all experience levels train side-by-side. VanHekken says one of the most rewarding parts is watching students grow in confidence.

"I'll start with the veterans that have been here and continue to see progress in their strength and just the way they're moving," HEAT instructor and physical education teacher Dan VanHekken said. "Then to see the beginners, or the rookies as I call them, how their nerves kind of go away after a few days and they really start buying into what we're doing."

The benefits go beyond strength and speed training.

"I also feel there's so much benefit to working out with your teammates, especially in the summer, especially coming in at 7 a.m.," VanHekken said. "I'm just excited for those kids that have worked and are working out with their teammates."

Hamilton athletic program coaches are noticing a difference in their athletes as well.

"HEAT has been great for all athletes in our program," said head football coach, Zach Harbison. "It creates a space and environment for the kids to work with their teammates. There is something special about that!"

The growth of the program has coincided with the first summer of usage for Hamilton High School's newly expanded weight room and physical education facility. The larger space has allowed more student-athletes to train together while taking advantage of upgraded equipment and dedicated areas for strength and conditioning.

"We just love the space," VanHekken said. "It's benefited us so well already with bigger groups in the summer."

HEAT is led by VanHekken alongside Zach Harbison, Joscelyn Fritzsche, and Brinley Nieuwenhuis, who continue to invest in the development of Hamilton student-athletes throughout the summer months.
