What does the future of manufacturing look like? At Hamilton Middle School, students won't have to imagine it—they'll soon experience it firsthand.
Thanks to a highly competitive Section 61v Career and Technical Education (CTE) Expansion Grant through the Michigan Department of Education, Hamilton Community Schools has launched a state-of-the-art Manufacturing Engineering Education ReImagined for All (MEERA) Lab, bringing industry-level technology and career exploration opportunities to students in grades 6-8.
The grant application was led by Director of Career, College, and Innovative Programs Mat Rehkopf, whose vision was to expand Career and Technical Education opportunities beyond the high school level and introduce students to advanced manufacturing and engineering at an earlier age.
Last winter, Hamilton Community Schools applied for the highly competitive Section 61v grant through the Michigan Department of Education to expand Career and Technical Education opportunities into the middle school grades. Hamilton was selected this spring as one of a limited number of school districts to receive the grant, allowing the district to establish the new MEERA laboratory at Hamilton Middle School.
The Section 61v grant not only funded the purchase of the laboratory equipment, but also included the instructional curriculum and consumable materials needed to sustain the program for multiple years. This investment removes significant financial barriers for the district while ensuring students will have access to high-quality, hands-on learning experiences that mirror today's advanced manufacturing and skilled trades industries.
"One of the exciting things with the MEERA Lab is introducing students to career opportunities at a younger age," Rehkopf says in the video. "We want students to see what's possible before they even get to high school."
Beginning this school year, sixth and seventh grade students will have the opportunity to enroll in MEERA 1, where they'll be introduced to engineering, advanced manufacturing, automation, robotics, electronics, and skilled trades through engaging, project-based learning. As the program grows, Hamilton Middle School plans to offer both MEERA 1 and MEERA 2, allowing students in grades 6-8 multiple opportunities to build their technical knowledge before entering high school.
Leading those experiences will be MEERA teacher Remington Rohrer, who says the program is centered around hands-on learning and helping students build confidence through real-world experiences.
"The biggest thing is getting students excited to create," Rohrer says. "They're learning by doing."
The new MEERA laboratory mirrors many of the technologies students may encounter in today's manufacturing facilities. The lab features:
Four additive manufacturing stations where students will design, prototype, and manufacture products using 3D printing technology.
Five robotics training stations focused on automation, programming, sensors, and industrial robotics.
Two CNC machining stations introducing students to precision manufacturing and computer-controlled machining.
Ten electronics kits that will allow students to design, build, and troubleshoot electronic circuits and control systems.
Five virtual reality welding stations, a welding simulation station, and welding personal protective equipment, giving students the opportunity to safely develop welding skills using immersive technology.
Materials testing, non-destructive testing (NDT), and precision measurement equipment that will introduce students to quality assurance, safety, engineering principles, and manufacturing inspection techniques.
Throughout the course, students will design, build, program, test, and solve authentic engineering challenges rather than simply reading about manufacturing careers in a textbook. The curriculum is intentionally designed to strengthen critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving while exposing students to high-demand career fields that are essential to West Michigan's economy.
The MEERA initiative also creates a seamless pathway for students into Hamilton High School's Career and Technical Education programs, dual enrollment opportunities, apprenticeships, industry certifications, and future careers.
As Rehkopf explains, the goal extends far beyond teaching technical skills.
"We're preparing students for opportunities that exist right here in our community and throughout Michigan," Rehkopf says. "This gives them the chance to explore careers and discover interests they may not have known they had."
By expanding career exploration into the middle school years and equipping students with industry-standard technology, Hamilton Community Schools is helping students discover their passions earlier, develop valuable technical and employability skills, and build a strong foundation for college, career, and lifelong success.
