On Saturday night, the stage lights dimmed for a moment of heartfelt recognition as Hamilton Community Schools honored longtime costume designer Laurie Gansen at the end of the season finale.
Laurie, who is better known as "Mama G", has lovingly stitched together costumes and memories for countless productions over the years and was surprised with a special tribute celebrating her retirement from the role. The evening brought together directors she has worked with throughout her time in Hamilton theatre — from the early days of Youth Theatre with Dr. Fred Chmielewski, to high school productions with Al, Jacquie, and Paul Connelly, and more recently, middle school shows.
What began as a summer volunteer opportunity blossomed into a legacy of creativity, generosity, and mentorship. Laurie first joined the program during Hamilton’s Youth Theatre days, where she and others, including her six-year-old son at the time, helped bring stories to life on stage.
The evening included letters from alumni and current students, a gathering of family and friends, and a deep sense of gratitude from the entire community. Laurie’s impact has been felt not just in the detailed costumes she created, but in the encouragement and care she gave to generations of students.
Thank you, Laurie, for helping Hamilton theatre shine over the 27 years — one costume at a time.
