Hamilton High School junior Carter Sexton is already taking steps toward his future—by stepping into a college classroom.

Through Hamilton Community Schools’ brand new Early College program, Carter is currently taking classes at Hope College, gaining valuable experience while still in high school.

“It’s a little scary because everyone is at least two years older,” Carter shared. “But they don’t seem to notice that much, so it’s all right.”

That willingness to step outside his comfort zone is helping Carter get a head start on his goal of becoming a teacher.

“It just seemed like a good experience, and I wanted to go into teaching, so it was good to start that early,” he said.

Beyond the experience, the Early College opportunity is also making a significant financial impact. By earning college credits now, Carter is saving time and money—potentially completing up to two years of college with little to no cost.

“It’s quite a bit of money that I will be saving,” he said. “I’m just grateful that Hamilton started this program so I can get through school with little student debt and get a jump start.”

Looking ahead, Carter hopes to bring his passion for education back into the classroom—this time as a teacher.

“In a few years, I want to go into a school and start teaching,” he said. “Hopefully, I can have a positive impact on students’ lives.”
