After more than three decades of service, Jill Smith is closing a meaningful chapter at Hamilton Community Schools—one filled with smiles, breakthroughs, and countless student successes.
For 30+ years, Smith has dedicated her career to helping students find their voices, working closely with children on speech, language, and communication skills. Whether it was helping a student master a new sound or use a communication device to express a need, those “light bulb” moments became the heartbeat of her work.
“I think the biggest highlight is seeing that moment when it clicks,” Smith shared. “When they can finally say a sound or communicate something they need—and seeing how proud they are—it just makes my heart happy.”
Throughout her career, Smith served in multiple buildings across the district, spending the last several years in a place she describes as “home.”
“It’s felt like family away from family,” she said. “A home away from home.”
While reaching the 30-year milestone was always a goal, Smith knew she wanted to step away while still loving what she does—and she does.
“I love my job. I love working with the kids,” she said. “But it’s time to explore what’s next.”
That next chapter is already shaping up to be a special one. With a first grandchild expected in June and another daughter preparing for a wedding later this summer, Smith is looking forward to spending more time with family and embracing new moments in life.
As she reflects on her career, Smith hopes the impact she made will be lasting.
“I’ve seen hundreds and hundreds of kids over the years,” she said. “I hope I’ve made a positive difference in their lives.”
But in many ways, she says the impact has been mutual.
“They’ve probably made a bigger impact on my life,” she shared. “That’s going to be one of the hardest things—to say goodbye to those smiles and those ‘aha’ moments.”
