Hamilton Community Schools is proud to celebrate the journey of 2016 Hamilton High School graduate Jacob Charron, who recently reached a major milestone on his path to becoming a doctor. Charron matched into a family medicine residency program at Trinity Health Muskegon, the result of years of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to serving the West Michigan community he has always called home.
Match Day is one of the most significant moments in a medical student’s journey. After completing medical school, students interview with residency programs across the country and rank their top choices, while programs do the same. A computerized system then determines where each student will spend the next three to seven years training. For Charron, the outcome was exactly what he had hoped for.
“I wanted to stay in West Michigan and continue to grow here,” he said. “That was really important to me.”
That moment marked the culmination of a nearly 10-year journey that began at Hamilton High School. After graduating in 2016, Charron attended Calvin University before continuing his education at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in Grand Rapids. Along the way, he gained hands-on experience working in a COVID-19 testing lab and conducting research, including studies focused on prostate cancer and treatment options. Like many medical students, his path included challenges, adjustments, and moments that tested his resilience.
“It’s been difficult, but definitely accomplishable,” Charron said, noting the importance of support from his family as he balanced medical school with life at home. During his time in medical school, he and his wife also welcomed identical twin boys, adding another layer of responsibility to an already demanding schedule.
Charron ultimately chose to pursue family medicine because of the impact and flexibility the field provides. Family medicine physicians care for patients across all stages of life, building long-term relationships and addressing a wide range of health needs.
“It’s one of the most broad specialties you could go into,” he said. “You could be delivering babies or taking care of a 99-year-old. There’s almost a whole population you can take care of.”
As he reflected on his journey, Charron pointed back to his time at Hamilton Community Schools as an important foundation for his success. From taking Advanced Placement courses to building relationships with teachers, he credits the district with helping prepare him for the academic rigor of college and beyond.
“My education at Hamilton prepared me well for going into college,” he said.
He also shared a message for current students who may be considering a future in medicine or another challenging career path, encouraging them not to be discouraged by obstacles along the way.
“If there is something that’s difficult for you, you can get through it,” Charron said. “It might take more time, but I wouldn’t check off any career path because of that.”

That message is especially meaningful as Hamilton Community Schools continues to expand opportunities for students interested in healthcare, including new programs that provide hands-on experience and exposure to the medical field. Charron emphasized the value of those opportunities and encouraged students to seek out mentors, ask questions, and explore different career paths early on.
“There are a lot of people out there who would love to mentor you,” he said. “Don’t be afraid to seek that out.”
Beyond academics and career preparation, Charron also carries with him the memories and experiences that made Hamilton feel like home. From Friday night football games to time spent with friends and family, those moments continue to shape who he is today.
“I had a ton of fond memories at Hamilton,” he said. “I’m very thankful for everything the community invested in me.”
As he begins his residency in Muskegon, Charron is focused on continuing to grow as a physician while serving patients in the region. Looking ahead, he hopes to remain in West Michigan long-term and continue giving back to the community that helped shape his journey.
His story is a powerful example of what it means to be Prepared for Purpose—taking the lessons learned in Hamilton and using them to make a meaningful impact beyond the classroom.
