
Hamilton High School’s girls wrestling program reached a major milestone on Friday night, proudly hosting its first-ever Hamilton Girls Wrestling Invite. With 17 teams and more than 90 wrestlers in attendance, the event marked a historic moment for both the program and the growth of girls wrestling in West Michigan.
The Hamilton Hawkeyes delivered strong performances on the mat as well. When the final matches wrapped up, the Hawkeyes earned an impressive 4th place team finish out of 17 teams.
Individual Results:
115 lbs: Abbi Verhoeven – 2nd place (2–1)
120 lbs: Mykayla Provance – 3rd place (3–1)
120 lbs: Eryn Barnhill – DNP (0–2)
125 lbs: Korra Kapenga – 1st place (3–0)
135 lbs: Alyssa Volkers – DNP (1–2)
145 lbs: Brianna Ortiz – DNP (1–2)
Beyond the competition, the night showcased the strength of the Hamilton community. Successfully hosting an invitational of this size required extensive planning and teamwork behind the scenes. A special thank you goes out to Athletic Director Eric Talsma, the wrestling coaching staff, tournament workers, volunteers, officials, and everyone who contributed to making the event run smoothly.
Friday night wasn’t just about wins and placements—it was about progress, opportunity, and creating a welcoming stage for female athletes to compete and thrive.
