Hamilton Community Schools is celebrating two exceptional student musicians who are earning recognition at the highest level across the state of Michigan.
Through the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association State Solo & Ensemble program, Hamilton High School students Tyler Michielsen and Annika Johnson have been selected among the very best young musicians in Michigan—an incredible accomplishment that highlights their talent, dedication, and passion for music.
Tyler Michielsen has been named a finalist for Most Outstanding Soloist, placing him among the top six trumpet soloists in the entire state.
Annika Johnson has also earned finalist honors for Most Outstanding Soloist, ranking among the top ten French horn soloists statewide. In addition, she has been selected to perform in the prestigious Honors Woodwind Chamber Ensemble—an elite group made up of some of the top student musicians in Michigan.
Both students now have the opportunity to take the next step in the process, auditioning at Oakland University on April 10. From there, finalists may be selected to perform at the highly respected MSBOA Arts Showcase on May 8—one of the most distinguished stages for student musicians in the state.
Often compared to the “Oscars” of student music, simply being named a finalist is a tremendous honor. For Hamilton Community Schools, having two students reach this level in the same year is a testament to both individual excellence and the strength of the district’s music program.
Adding to the moment, Tyler and Annika also serve as Hamilton High School’s 2025 Homecoming King and Queen—making their achievements even more special for the school community.
Hamilton Community Schools proudly celebrates these two outstanding Hawkeyes. Their hard work, commitment, and love for music continue to inspire those around them and represent the district with excellence across Michigan.
