Hamilton Community Schools continues to expand innovative learning opportunities for students, and one of the most unique offerings—Hamilton Virtual School (HVS)—was recently highlighted on the H2Know podcast.

Principal Mary Wilkinson joined the conversation to provide insight into a program that is often misunderstood—but quickly growing and making a major impact across the district.

More Than Just “Online School”

When many hear “virtual school,” they picture students sitting at home on a computer all day. But as Wilkinson explained, that couldn’t be further from reality.

“We are a school in the Hamilton Community School District… and we provide a lot of real-world, hands-on experiences. There is a lot of offline learning, and I think that’s what makes us unique.”

Hamilton Virtual School serves approximately 1,300 students—both full-time and part-time—and offers a model that blends online learning with meaningful, in-person opportunities.

“When people hear virtual school, they think students are sitting at home on a computer all day—but that’s not really what we are.”

Flexible Pathways for Every Learner

One of the biggest strengths of HVS is its flexibility. The program is designed to support a wide range of students and families, offering multiple pathways depending on individual needs.

Students can choose from:

  • A fully virtual option with support from teachers and a learning coach at home
  • A hybrid model that combines online coursework with in-person electives and experiences
  • A more blended approach that includes face-to-face support for core subjects

“With about 1,300 students, it really is all across the board. Some students need flexibility, some thrive online, and some just need a different learning environment.”

This flexibility allows students to stay engaged in their education while balancing travel, extracurricular interests, or unique learning needs.

Hands-On Learning Still Leads the Way

Despite being a virtual program, HVS places a strong emphasis on hands-on, real-world learning.

Students participate in science experiments, collaborative projects, and project-based learning (PBL) experiences that challenge them to think critically and creatively.

“It’s not something you can just Google. Students are creating something real—whether that’s a project, a presentation, or a product that shows their learning.”

From building projects to presenting their work, students are actively engaged in their learning—both online and offline.

A Strong Support System

At the heart of Hamilton Virtual School is a dedicated team of educators who work to support each student’s success.

“We have an amazing staff. They go above and beyond to make students feel welcome and supported—we truly meet them where they’re at.”

Students receive regular check-ins, academic support, and access to services such as interventions, counseling, and special education resources—ensuring they are never navigating their education alone.

Supporting Homeschool Families & Building Community

Hamilton Virtual School has also become a valuable resource for homeschool families across West Michigan, offering curriculum, structure, and opportunities for connection.

“Families want support, they want curriculum, and they want community—and we’re able to provide all three.”

Students have opportunities to participate in choir, theater productions, field trips, service projects, and more—bringing a strong sense of community to the virtual experience.

Growing Demand & A Bright Future

The program’s success has led to significant growth, including a waitlist for part-time enrollment and increasing interest from families across the region.

“We’ve seen a lot of success as families want both the flexibility and the support. They want the community piece too.”

Looking ahead, Hamilton Virtual School will move into its own dedicated building for the 2026–27 school year, creating even more opportunities for students and staff.

“We’re excited to have our own space and continue to grow. With that comes even more opportunities for students.”

A Program Built on People

While the model is innovative, Wilkinson is quick to credit the people behind it.

“I couldn’t do any of this without the staff—they’re just amazing. We continue to grow, and it’s exciting to see where this program is going.”

Hamilton Virtual School is redefining what education can look like—flexible, personalized, and deeply connected to real-world experiences.
