What began as an idea to bring people back together after one of the most challenging times in recent history has turned into one of Hamilton’s most anticipated community traditions. This Friday, September 19, the Hawkeye Hometown Tailgate will celebrate its fifth annual event from 5:00–7:00 PM at Hamilton Middle School and Cultivate Community Church.

The event was founded in 2021 by former Board of Education President, Ben Randle, who served on the board from 2017–2022. After leading the district through the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic, Randle recognized the need for healing and reconnection.

“In June of 2021, everyone was tired,” Randle recalled. “As board president, I thought, we need to do something to start healing. I said, we’re going to throw a party.

The vision quickly grew into something bigger than a school-sponsored gathering. Since district funds could not be used, Randle and other leaders reached out to the community—and the response was overwhelming. Local businesses, churches, and families immediately stepped up to support the idea, with Cultivate Community Church emerging as a key partner in hosting and planning the event.

From its very first year, the Hawkeye Hometown Tailgate was more than just a celebration; it became a symbol of Hamilton’s resilience, unity, and spirit.

Today, the event has a life of its own. “It’s not Hamilton Community Schools’ tailgate,” Randle said. “It’s Hamilton Community Tailgate. That makes me very proud.”

This year, the Tailgate features 42 community sponsors, the largest number to date, underscoring how deeply rooted it has become in Hamilton’s culture. The night will include a live cover band, performances from the Hamilton marching band and vocal music groups, rock climbing walls, mini golf, a petting zoo, face painting, henna tattoos, activity tables, and games for all ages.

Local favorites will also be on hand: Knot Spot Pretzels, ice cream, popsicles, and food from Miller Creek Tavern will ensure no one goes home hungry.

Former board member Craig Van Beek and current board member—known affectionately as “Mr. Hamilton”—Loren Joostberns have also loved to see the idea come to life.

"The biggest thing that wows me is every time we try to do something like this, the community just supports it overwhelmingly," said Joostberns.

Looking back, Randle says it’s humbling to see how the Tailgate has grown and endured. “The fact that it’s grown to more than 40 sponsors now—that’s the dream. Too big is not an option.”

The Hawkeye Hometown Tailgate has become exactly what Randle and the board envisioned back in 2021: a chance for Hamilton families to laugh, play, reconnect, and celebrate the community they love.
