At Bentheim Elementary, learning starts with curiosity, hands-on experiences, and a whole lot of encouragement—and kindergarten teacher Lisa Rumsey is right at the heart of it all.
Now in her eighth year teaching in Hamilton Community Schools, Rumsey brings energy, positivity, and a passion for early learning into her classroom every day. From the moment students walk through the door, they are welcomed into an environment built around exploration, creativity, and connection.
“Learning in kindergarten is very hands-on. It’s center-based,” Rumsey shared. “Kids love coming to school every day, and I think the best part of my job is really instilling that love for learning in our youngest learners.”
That foundation makes a powerful difference.
At the start of the school year, many kindergarten students are just beginning to recognize letters, sounds, and numbers. But by the end of the year, the transformation is remarkable. Students grow into confident readers who can understand what they’re reading, and they develop strong math skills—counting to 100 by ones and tens, and even beginning to add and subtract.
“It’s just so fun to see the astronomical growth,” Rumsey said. “Watching that progress and helping students discover that they can learn—it’s incredible.”
Inside her classroom, that growth is fueled by encouragement and celebration. Whether it’s cheering on a student learning a new concept or celebrating small victories along the way, Rumsey creates a space where students feel proud, supported, and excited to try.
Just as important as what happens in the classroom is the strong connection with families and the community.
“Teaching in Hamilton is really great,” she said. “The community and the parents are so supportive and encouraging. They’re quick to share a kind word and follow up on their student’s progress. It’s such a blessing to be part of this community.”
