At Blue Star Elementary, kindergarten is about more than just learning letters and numbers—it’s about growing as a whole person. And for longtime teacher Jill Sloothaak, that mission is at the heart of everything she does.

“In our classroom, we talk about how we come to school to grow our brains and we also come to school to grow our hearts,” Sloothaak shared.

Now in her 23rd year of teaching, Sloothaak has found her passion in kindergarten, calling it the “perfect sweet spot.” Her classroom is filled with energy, curiosity, and creativity, where students are encouraged to explore and learn in ways that feel natural and fun.

Kindergarteners, she says, thrive through play—and that’s exactly how she approaches teaching.

“I love taking the academic skills we’re responsible for teaching and making it feel like play,” she said. “Fun, games, movement, and hands-on learning—that’s where kids learn best.”

Inside her classroom, students are not only building foundational academic skills, but also learning how to be independent, work together, solve problems, and build friendships. These early lessons help shape who they become both in and out of school.

At Hamilton Community Schools, Sloothaak says that growth is supported by a strong, connected team.

“It truly is a village here,” she said. “Everyone is invested in each child’s success—not just academically, but in helping them become the best versions of themselves.”

As one of the first teachers many families encounter in the district, Sloothaak understands the importance of her role.

“I count it a privilege to work with children and families who are just getting started in Hamilton,” she said. “It’s special to be one of the first faces they see, and I don’t take that lightly.”
