Morrison Wins State Championship as Hawkeyes Shine at Ford Field

Hamilton High School senior Bryce Morrison accomplished a lifelong goal on March 7, capturing the 150-pound state championship at the MHSAA Individual Wrestling Finals at Ford Field in Detroit.

For Morrison, the moment was the culmination of years of dedication to the sport.

“I don’t even know how to describe the feeling,” Morrison said after the match. “It was incredible. It was one of the happiest feelings I’ve ever had.”

After the final whistle, the emotions quickly set in.

“After the match I ran up and hugged my parents. I was crying. I couldn’t hold myself together,” he said.

Morrison admitted he needed to double-check the scoreboard before letting the moment fully sink in.

“I looked up at the scoreboard to see if I actually won,” he said. “Then I looked over to the crowd and my coaches. I hugged my coaches, got my hand raised, and then ran up to the stands. I hugged all my friends on the way up there and then my family was waiting for me.”

Winning the state title marked the realization of a dream Morrison had carried since childhood.

“It was just great to see all my hard work over all the years paying off,” he said. “Being able to achieve my childhood dream of becoming a state champion was just an incredible feeling.”

Morrison also reflected on the people who helped shape his wrestling journey. He credited longtime practice partner Malachi Kapenga and Coach Andy Cook for helping develop both his love for the sport and his competitive drive. Morrison joins the list of Hamilton wrestling state champions with Kapenga, Cook, Gregg Stoel, and Mike Oetman.

“Malachi has been my practice partner since we were about five years old,” Morrison said. “And Coach Andy is really the reason I love wrestling. He’s the one who got me into it.”

The atmosphere at Ford Field made the moment even more special, as a large group of Hamilton supporters filled the stands to cheer him on.

“They had the whole front row filled with people from Hamilton,” Morrison said. “I even had friends from other schools there cheering for me. It was just an incredible feeling.”

Strong Showing for the Hawkeyes

Morrison’s championship headlined a strong weekend for Hamilton wrestling.

His younger brother, Chase Morrison, finished 3rd in the state at the Individual Finals as a sophomore, earning a place on the podium and adding to the Morrison family’s impressive weekend.

Hamilton also made history in girls wrestling, as Korra Kapenga placed 5th in the state, becoming the first Hamilton girls wrestler to earn a state medal. Senior Tyler Block and freshman Abbi VerHoeven were the other Hamilton representatives in the state tournament.
