After an extraordinary 36-year teaching career, Hamilton High School math teacher Travis Pertner is officially hanging up the marker and calculator. His heartfelt announcement of retirement comes after 28 years of dedicated service to the Hamilton Community Schools district and a total of 82 seasons coaching extracurriculars.
“I want to thank all of my co-workers, great athletes, and students of the past that have enriched my life,” Pertner shared with emotion. “I can’t imagine working anywhere else.”
Throughout his career, Mr. Pertner became much more than just a teacher. His passion extended far beyond the classroom, with a remarkable commitment to coaching track and field (32 seasons), basketball (18 seasons), cross country (16 seasons), and Quiz Bowl. In total, Pertner played a key role in 82 different extracurricular seasons — an astounding contribution that left an impact on countless students.
While many know Pertner for his precision in math and dedication on the field, others were surprised to learn about his quirky side — including a unique hobby: poetry. Over the years, dozens of poems have been written about various athletes and moments in his career. “When Erica Freyhof got her Big Ten Athlete of the Week, I was just so pumped. I got to coach her, and she’s a Big Ten Athlete of the Week! And so… out came my poetry pen,” he smiled.
It’s that combination of heart, humor, and humility that made Mr. Pertner a beloved figure in Hamilton. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and a deep commitment to students’ growth and success — both in academics and athletics.
“There’s never really a perfect time to retire,” he admitted. “But there are other things in life besides what I’ve been doing here the last 28 years.”
Pertner added that he looks forward to slowing down, skipping those white-knuckle winter drives to school, and staying connected with the students, athletes, and colleagues he’s impacted over the years.
As he signed off, Pertner left his community with one final message: “It’s been great serving this district for 28 years. Over and out. God bless.”
