At Hamilton Community Schools, students with and without disabilities come together as teammates, learning what it means to support, encourage, and truly see one another.
On Friday, March 20, Hamilton Community Schools hosted its Third Annual Unified Basketball Assembly, bringing together all students and staff in grades 5–12 for a powerful, high-energy celebration of teamwork, inclusion, and connection. The gym was filled with excitement as classmates, teachers, and staff packed the stands—cheering, celebrating, and creating unforgettable memories together.
Unified Basketball is part of the Unified Champion Schools initiative through Special Olympics Michigan, designed to promote social inclusion by uniting students of all abilities on the same team. It’s about more than just the game—it’s about building relationships, developing confidence, and creating a sense of belonging for every student involved.
That impact was felt throughout the entire day.
“I think it’s a great opportunity. We get to create so many bonds with people—teachers, students, peers—all together,” one student shared. “We all kind of become friends. We practice together, hang out, and bond over all the achievements everyone gets to make.”
Another student described it simply: “It’s about friendship and hanging out to play basketball.”
For many, the experience goes beyond the court. “It’s really cool to be a part of Unified Basketball because it’s just so fun for everybody to be able to play together,” one participant said, while another added, “I was a little nervous at first, but then I got used to it… I made my first three-pointer.”
The energy inside the gym reflected just how meaningful the program is to students. From big plays to small moments, every basket was celebrated, every effort recognized.
“My favorite part is hanging out with my friends and making new friends,” one student shared.
That sense of connection was echoed by others in the crowd. “This is a great atmosphere where kids can come together and just bond and have a great time cheering on these athletes,” one student said. “Everybody’s so supportive when anyone makes a shot—it’s amazing to see how much everyone really cares about each other.”
Events like the Unified Basketball Assembly highlight what makes Hamilton Community Schools special. It’s not just about competition—it’s about community. It’s about creating spaces where every student feels valued, included, and proud to be part of something bigger than themselves.
