At Blue Star Elementary, responsibility, leadership, and teamwork aren’t just taught—they’re lived. On Friday, May 2, students proudly presented their roles during the school’s Meaningful Work Showcase, an event that welcomed parents, district administrators, and board members to see the impact of student-led jobs around the building.

From helping out in the lunchroom and keeping the playground clean, to watering the school garden, assisting with assemblies, and writing thank-you or birthday cards, students are actively taking ownership of their school environment through the Meaningful Work program.

“Meaningful Work is a school job program that helps give students responsibility,” one student explained. “It’s important because you get to help the school—and sometimes teachers need help, and we help them too.”

During the showcase, students set up booths to explain their jobs and the value they bring to the school. Many shared how these roles are preparing them for the future, building confidence, and giving them the chance to find purpose in their school.

“You get to make jobs easier for people—and have fun while doing it,” said another student.

Staff and guests were equally inspired by the pride and dedication students showed.

“I love to see the kids empowered and thinking about how they can impact others,” said Hamilton Community Schools Director of Teaching & Learning, Laura Zeinstra. “They take great pleasure in their work and in supporting their school. It’s incredibly encouraging.”

The Meaningful Work program is a powerful example of how Hamilton Community Schools helps students feel connected, capable, and proud of their contributions, both at Blue Star and Hamilton Elementary.

As one student summed it up best: “Everyone gets to show that our school is amazing.”
