While many classrooms are still quiet for summer, learning continues at Hamilton Community Schools—especially for our dedicated elementary educators. This week marked the second session of our summer literacy training, focused on the evolving research behind the Science of Reading and how to reach every learner.

Last summer, teachers attended a four-day training to explore the foundational elements of literacy instruction. This year’s follow-up session built on that knowledge, equipping staff with new strategies, deeper insights, and updated best practices to better support students at every reading level.

“We work with teachers to create the urgency—it’s not just one or two kids. It’s all kids,” said Director of Teaching & Learning, Laura Zeinstra. “This is about ensuring every student has access to high-quality reading instruction.”

The professional development day brought together teachers from across multiple grade levels to collaborate, ask questions, and prepare for the upcoming school year.

“It’s really great to be with other teachers, to collaborate and fill in the gaps as we look ahead,” said Hamilton Elementary first grade long-term sub, Marisa Halford. “I’ve had almost no downtime this summer, but I absolutely love these days. Being together in a space where I can talk with teachers from different grades and share ideas is incredibly valuable.”

This spirit of collaboration and shared learning was a key takeaway for many.

“Having everyone together to talk about how to improve our practice really helps build excitement,” Zeinstra added. “It reminds us that we’re supported—by our peers and by our administration. We’re all in this together, for all kids.”

Hamilton Community Schools is proud of the time, energy, and passion our staff continues to pour into professional growth—even during the summer months. We look forward to seeing the impact of this learning in our classrooms this fall.
